We are a group of Jewish residents of Scarsdale who came together around a shared belief that our community would benefit from stronger connections to one another and a more organized civic voice.
Our Board is made up of 13 moms and dads from across Scarsdale, with at least two members from each of the five elementary school zones. We are men and women; Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Mizrahi, and Persian; and come from Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist, Orthodox, and unaffiliated Jewish backgrounds. Some of us were born outside the United States, some grew up here in Scarsdale, some have lived here for decades, and some are relatively new to the community.
Our children range in age from preschool through college and attend Scarsdale public schools as well as Jewish day schools. Collectively, we have at least one child in each of the seven public schools located in Scarsdale. Among us are members of several local synagogues as well as those who are not affiliated with a synagogue. Our professional and educational backgrounds span law, medicine, finance, academia, real estate, business, the arts, advocacy, marketing, Middle Eastern affairs, and more, and the breadth of our collective life experience includes having lived on four continents.
We travel in different social circles and we do not share identical political views – in fact, most of us do not know what one another's political views are. What brought us together is a commitment to Jewish community, Jewish peoplehood, and the belief that even with our many differences, there is value in building a broad communal Jewish organization where as many Jews in Scarsdale as possible can find common ground and a sense of belonging.
This is our founding Board. As SJCA grows, we intend for our leadership to evolve along with the community we are building.
